Neon glow 

A very cheap (very easy and professional looking) effect on text is the neon glow from Adobe PhotoShop 4.0. Just load or create a jpeg bitmap in PhotoShop. Select Filter/Artistic/Neon Glow from the menu. Set desired glow size, brightness and color. Below I used size 5, brightness 28 and a red color.
Neon glow can be used successfully in combination with the lens flare effect.
