Here is a simple introduction to animations.

Think of an animation as a number of different frames that make a motion. When you got all the frames, you can put them together as an animation this way:

Save all the frames in Gif89a format and make them transparent if you wish.

You will now need some software. I can recommend:

Microsoft GIF Animator - easy and free - but cannot handle big animations
Ulead GIF Animator - easy to use but cost money
PolyView - very fast with big animations

Ulead GIF Animator has a built-in wizard, which will help you make simple animations.

Opening the first frame in Microsoft GIF Animator
Add the rest of the frames using the Insert icon or pressing Ctrl+I.
If you want your animated image to loop, then click Looping and Repeat Forever on the Animation tab sheet.
The Image tab sheet is different for each frame. You can set the transparent color (if your frames are non transparent) and most important, you can set the time the specific frame will be displayed.

After you have created your animation, you should optimize it.
